A Jerk in Progress, performed by Mike Goldstein

A Jerk in Progress

“So very, very wrong. But the way he told it, just made laughing at it so very, very right.”

A Jerk in Progress is a combination of the long time favourite on Australia's comedy scene's rapid fire jokes and hot new material.

Originally from America, Mike has done it all: toured all over Australia and abroad, opened for legends Doug Stanhope, Tommy Tiernan and Stephen Merchant and been a finalist in RAW Comedy, Green Faces & Catch a Rising Star in NYC.

Mike has also performed to sell out crowds throughout South East Asia, America, South Africa, the UK and is a regular at Sydney’s world famous Comedy Store.

Am I Right, Ladies?, performed by Ellen Briggs, Mel Buttle, Jasmine Fairbairn, Michelle Azevedo, Erin Michelle, Lauren Randall, Ting Lim, Grace Jarvis, Jordan Kadell

Am I Right, Ladies?

This Bris Funny Fest, Heya Bar welcomes a great wave of funny women to the stage for two nights of comedy that are less 'doll face', more droll face. Each night is hosted by a different Aussie legend of laughs – Ellen Briggs and Mel Buttle.

Headlined by Brisbane’s favourite bad mum, Jasmine Fairbairn – the converse-clad Canadian fresh from her sold-out show ‘Swimming in the Seas of Failure’. If this show serves up a layer cake of up-and-coming Australian comics, Jasmine Fairbairn places the cherry on top.

Acts include the darkly intelligent Ting Lim (seriously, watch yourself), the saucy and soupy founder of Soup at The Milk Factory Michelle Azevedo, the word-weaving, motley knit-clad Grace Jarvis, the skeptically scathing librarian of your dreams Lauren Randall, co-founder of the Crosstown Comedy Club and sometimes founder of her house keys Jordan Kadell, and Erin Michelle – a phoenix bird making snow angels in the ashes of her former lives.

From nationally recognised comedians, to up-and-coming comics, you can count on being certifiably fed with a night of all-girl, all great standup comedy.

Best of the Fest, performed by Marcus Thorpe, Richie Goodacre, Red Simbulan, Ting Lim, and Jasmine Fairbairn. Hosted by Michael Connell.

Boys Country, performed by Nick Carr, Vaughan Davies & Doony

Boys Country

These country boys brave Bris-Vegas to offer a countrified comedic occasion.

A bit rough around the edges & not a high polished metropolitan masterpiece but whether it’s the serenade of Nick’s singing or hypnosis of Doony’s drawl you’ll chuckle, giggle & laugh as they jest & quip like the crack of a whip. And if you like a surprise this’ll please as Vaughan strums a tune you can whistle that's pleasant like the prick of a thistle.

Chris Martin & Mikey Griffin: Piss Fartin? Mikey Likey!, performed by Chris Martin & Michael Griffin

Chris Martin & Mikey Griffin: Piss Fartin? Mikey Likey!

Chris Martin & Mikey Griffin: Piss Fartin? Mikey Likey!

“The show is an hour of stand up and sketch comedy presented by two funny guys. It’s our modern day twist on the typical split bill – duo and solo sketches, high energy character bits, stand up comedy, and a finale that will leave the audience in stitches.”

Following vibrant, slick and hilarious performances at Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Brisbane Comedy Festival and a sellout run at Anywhere Theatre Festival, highly talented Brisbane comedians Chris and Michael continue a triumphant 2017 by bringing their show to Heya Bar for BrisFunnyFest this August.

Both rising comedy stars, Qld Raw Comedy State Finalist 2017 Martin is one of the country’s most promising new stand up comedians and Griffin once got mentioned in Federal Parliament and called a liar on the radio by the social services minister – this show is not one to miss.

Once you’ve seen an hour of these two Piss Fartin around, you’ll be saying Mikey Likey!

Dean's Revenge, performed by Andy Thompson

Dean's Revenge

No one really knows what Dean has been doing these last 15 years. But now he’s back and he’s…hungry?
It’s amazing how much of the world you can see when you’re driving at 100 kilometres an hour with a pie in your hand and Andy Thompson has seen a lot of Australia and eaten more than the odd pie. After a decade of performing comedy and a slightly longer period spent working out which way water flows, Andy is bringing his show to the Bris Funny Fest in 2017. Dean’s Revenge is a collection of stories, anecdotes and musings from Andy’s life on the road with observations garnered while living out of a rental car in the middle of nowhere.

Taylor Edwards and Rosa Sottile are! This Bris Funny Fest, follow your dreams and jump headlong into an hour of absurd, existentialist and stupid sketch and character comedy with Brisbane’s favourite women weirdos. It's a split bill for the ages, in a time when nothing matters, and everything matters, literally performed in a big ass cupboard.

Greg Larsen, performed by Greg Larsen

Greg Larsen

Winner: Director's Choice 2016 - Melbourne International Comedy Festival
Winner: Golden Gibbo 2014 - Melbourne International Comedy Festival
Writer - Fancy Boy (ABC), Ronny Chieng International Student (ABC, Comedy Central)

Greg Larsen is a Melbourne-based, slightly balding, overweight man in his early 30s who requires glasses for reading and driving. He has a modest TV career, being featured as the resident celebrity expert on ABC2's Dirty Laundry Live, as well as the Fancy Boy Fresh Blood sketches on ABC iView.

You may have also heard him as a regular guest on the 6-part radio series Chatback on Triple J with Tom Ballard, or seen his award winning shows, Fancy Boy Variety Show at the 2014 Melbourne International Comedy Festival or True Australian Patriots – Live! at the 2016 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

But more likely than not, you haven't seen him, or heard of him before. But that's OK. He is pretty funny, and has an impressive DVD collection, so you will probably want to be mates with him.

High Class Variety Show, performed by Orlando Furious, Ashwin Segkar, GNIGHTZ, Grace Jarvis, The Gametes, Geordie McGrath

High Class Variety Show

Putting together local talent in music and comedy that lean on the experimental side, High Class Variety Show seeks to provide a full night of non-stop weirdo entertainment to suit all tastes.

Our musicians are a female rapper, neurotic punk band and a baroque synth performer. While our comedians have an incredible background of genre-pushing stand-up comedy.

With visual projections and audio gags to maintain the pace of the night, the High Class Variety Show sure seems to be a low-class affair.

Howe Hilarious, performed by Anne Ferguson-Howe

Howe Hilarious

Howe Hilarious

Anne Ferguson Howe is a larger than life personality in more ways than one.  With her loud, gregarious, crass, visual descriptions of life as a former beautician and her quest to find love, you will either adore or abhor what she has to share with you.
After three seasons of The Very Anne Show on Brisbane 31 Digital and having toured all over Australia, Anne appeared in the 'Wild Women of Comedy' show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2012.
"Howe is a notch above. As Eskimos have multiple words for "snow", Ferguson-Howe has a seemingly endless array of euphemisms for a particular part of the female anatomy"   Herald Sun
This is Anne's first solo show and she's completely bricking it.

I Do?, performed by Steven J. Whiteley

I Do?

Join Steven on his journey from bachelor to (almost) married. From meeting to dating, co-habitating and planning a wedding, this one hour show will resonate with everyone from singles to married couples, but especially with anyone who is currently planning a wedding.

Steven J Whiteley began performing in Adelaide in 1996. Since then he has toured everywhere in and around Australia and overseas. Nicknamed “The Bogan Prince of Australian Comedy”, he has performed with the likes of Stephen K Amos, Ed Byrne, Adam Hills, Steady Eddy and Jimeoin, to name just a few. He now performs extensively on cruise ships around the world, but likes to tour Australia when he’s back on home soil.

Steven recently released his second DVD titled “You Can’t Say That” following the success of his 2012 release “And Another Thing”. His natural storytelling ability makes him a crowd favourite as he recounts personal experiences and observations of everyday life. Quite simply, he’s not to be missed.

I Learnt Something Once, performed by Justin 'Rusty' White

I Learnt Something Once

Justin "Rusty" White is perhaps the ginger stepchild of NZ comedy: solid achiever but often ignored, denied pocket money, or even beaten, he has made his smudgy mark on the NZ comedy scene by relentlessly not sucking in venues great and small throughout our green and queasy land.

He's worked with most of the big kiwi names and the odd Aussi (Ben Hurley, Urzilla Carlson, Brendan Lovegrove, Rhys Darby, Gish, James Nokise, Axis of Awesome etc. ) and is sometimes name-checked overseas as someone who may be able to help Nigerian royalty get huge amounts of money out of their homeland.

From his nearly twenty years of standup experience, he can convincingly claim to know everything. Well, nearly everything. Most things. Maybe not most, but certainly a whole lot of things. At least twenty. He...learned something once. You owe it to yourself to see this cult classic comic and find out what that thing was.

International Sex Icon, performed by Snap presented by RuseWebsites

International Sex Icon

All the way from Christchurch, NZ, join Snap presented by RuseWebsites, a local legend of radio and stage, on an hour of comedy vaguely explaining how he gained the title, International Sex Icon.

Snap presented by RuseWebsites is many things to many people, but above all else, he is an international sex icon. Sure some might try claim one of his other titles is more impressive, philanthropist, party ambassador, world record breaker, important businessman... but we're not just talking local sex icon here, this is international.

And one does not bestow that title upon themselves lightly. No, there's a good hour of backstory (admittedly, mostly irrelevant) that needs to be told to truly understand how from such humble beginnings as a loveable homeless scamp, Snap could reach the pinnacle of sexual desire.

Joseph Rasmus: Two Steps from Fame, performed by Joseph Rasmus

Joseph Rasmus: Two Steps from Fame

American comedian, Joseph Rasmus, is on a global quest to achieve comedic fame. Rather than be cliché and pursue his dream in New York or Los Angeles or Melbourne, he is being a comedy hipster; doing it in Brisbane.
Last month, Rasmus sensed his impending celebrity after being recognized in a Sushi Train. That’s when he decided to record his first comedy special. It was the natural next career step after opening for Lewis Black, being featured by TBS, writing a musical about US Congress, and losing his pectoral virginity.
This August, pack into the Archway Bar for Two Steps from Fame. You’ll laugh, learn, and perhaps be as confused as Rasmus by the existence of Dr. Snips’ Walk-In Vasectomy Clinic. But most importantly, when he becomes famous and then the fame goes to his head and then he wrecks a sports car while tripping on octopus anti-venom, you can seem super cool by telling your friends, “I’m not surprised. I saw him before he was famous and he was already talking in the third person back then.”
11 & 13 August. Archway Bar. Tickets $20 Online or $25 at the Door. The venue is also offering a $20 Two Hour Drink Package (Hour Before and After Show) of Beer, Wine, & Basic Spirits!

Keith On Fire, performed by Keith Cheng

Keith On Fire

standup/gag comedy: This is a standup comedy show about why and how Keith Cheng came into the possession of a burned face. If you think being an immigrant is hard, try being an immigrant with a burned face. On a day to day basis, Keith wonders if people are judgemental to his ethnicity or are they just petrified by the glowing redness of his crimson face or his border-line autistic personality. He initially thought his singlehood could be solved by obtaining a pleasing physique, so he started working out real hard in the gym, just to end up realising the gym is not a plastic surgery clinic. After being told by his doctor that there's no cure, he decided to watch the world burn while waiting for his imaginary girlfriend to show up....

Keytar-ed and Feathered, performed by Keytar-ed and Feathered

Andrew is a Tasmanian, turned Melbournian, turned Queenslander who has been performing stand-up for a large number of years. He's toured with shows around rural Queensland and is just an entertaining joy to watch.

Together Glenn and Andrew are bringing their talents to the Bris Funny Fest stage. There will be jokes, music, virtual reality, horror karaoke stories and more.

Little Simon & Big Garfunkel, performed by David Woodhead, James McKenzie

Little Simon & Big Garfunkel

Masculinity is a Prison, performed by Ben Hetherington, Daniel Dawson, James Matthews, Adam Murray

Masculinity is a Prison

Watch out! These scumbags are entitled! They’ve got a license to jump the queue, and they always use it!

From the doldrums of the 1%, Adam, Ben, Daniel, and James have the privilege of debuting their combination sketch and stand-up show at Bris Funny Fest: Masculinity is a Prison.

Masculinity is a Prison is a tale of redemption. These guys are on the path to atonement for their sins as men. Witness the rebirth.

Not sure what to expect? Statistics suggest there’s a high probability that one of these blokes will commit a random act of career suicide.

Matt Okine, performed by Matt Okine

Matt Okine

Matt Okine returns to his home town for two intimate shows only. Some old / some new.

He has scooped some major accolades in the past few years, including the prestigious Director’s Choice Award at the 2015 Melbourne International Comedy Festival for his intrinsically personal show, The Other Guy. Following the success of this live stand-up show the popular TV channel Stan announced The Other Guy as one of the new original productions for 2017, to be written by and starring Matt Okine. Other Awards that year consisted of the 2015 ARIA Award for Best Comedy Release for Matt Okine; Live at the Enmore Theatre. Me, Myself & I, performed by Nicchia Schutt, Lauren Randall, Beck Buckingham

Me, Myself & I

This Bris Funny Fest, Heya Comedy welcomes a great wave of funny women to the stage for two nights of comedy that are less 'doll face', more droll face. Playing across two nights in the festival, two Aussie legends of laughs – Ellen Briggs and Mel Buttle – take it in turns to host a new variety night of women in comedy, Am I Right, Ladies?

Headlined by Brisbane’s favourite bad mum, Jasmine Fairbairn – the converse-clad Canadian fresh from her sold-out show Swimming in the Seas of Failure. If this show serves up a layer cake of up-and-coming Australian comics, Jasmine Fairbairn places the cherry on top.

About the performers

As brassy as she is classy, your host on the 8th of August has bagged first prize on the National Foxtel Comedy Channel's Be a Comedian and was a finalist in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Raw Comedy competition. Ellen Briggs will absolutely split (and mend) your sides.

On Tuesday 15th August, you’ll be squirming like worms at the hand of Mel Buttle – as seen on The Weekly with Charlie Pickering and host of The Great Australian Bake Off. Her show I Can’t Believe It’s Not Buttle sparked Herald Sun to note, “The right mix of sarcastic self-deprecation and genuine vulnerability...expect to see Mel Buttle mature into one of Australia’s greatest comedians.”

The lineup includes young locals, some of who have founded independent rooms in Brisbane such as Soup at The Milk Factory and The Crosstown Comedy Club, a recipient of Queensland Theatre Company’s Young Playwright’s Award in 2015, and two Raw Comedy Competition finalists from 2009 and 2016.

Many of these women first performed together at Heya Comedy’s International Women’s Day event, and decided it only made sense to keep a good thing going.

This all-girl, all great lineup is a chance for audiences to enjoy some of the smartest, sassiest and show-stopping comedians Brisbane has to offer, all under one roof. The performers in Am I Right, Ladies? are key contributors to Brisbane’s comedy scene, some responsible for running great rooms, others having representing QLD in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Raw Comedy Competition – these women are at the core of funny.

Not Here to Make Friends, performed by Lauren Randall

Not Here to Make Friends

Lauren Randall is a Brisbane local and regularly performs at open mic and curated comedy venues in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast. A combination of self-doubt, slight ambition and a total lack of regard for consequences has lead Lauren to commit to delivering something special. Her very first comedy show.

Like all first times, it could go either way, but Lauren doesn't care. If you've ever vomited in public, developed an addiction to reality television or worked in customer service, this is the show for you.

Poncho Orange, performed by Dani Cabs

Poncho Orange

Part Latin-lover, part human pleasure-machine, Poncho Orange is on an eternal quest for belonging.. The good kind of belonging, if you know what I mean?

Poncho Orange is a wild mix of clowning, dancing and physical comedy. Flowing through the audience with his hypnotic and sensual moves, Dani Cabs delicately and innocently leads us on an unforgettable tale of passion, desire and pure silliness. Quantum Bad Boy, performed by Nick Capper

Quantum Bad Boy

Sure scientists go to uni for a large amount years, cure disease, solve problems and stuff but what we really want to know is what a comedian thinks about science.

Nick Capper went to an agricultural boarding school and has read nearly 4 books. This man knows Issaac Newton personally but is still daring enough to eat one of those sachets that say "Do Not Eat".

This show is trying to be about science and features a small part about sex robots.

Nick Capper has been doing standup for 10 years all around Australia, he’s had sold out shows at Sydney Comedy Festival, Perth Fringe Festival and Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Nick is known for his friendly, dry unique style and odd stories.

Release the Bees, performed by David McNevin & Jared Smit

Release the Bees

David McNevin's clever and absurd brand of comedy has been seen everywhere from the Melbourne Comedy Festival to ABC2. He's also been seen smoking outside comedy venues, which is disappointing.

Jared Smit has performed at the Brisbane Comedy Festival and written for the Betoota Advocate. He's still not quite as successful as David McNevin, but at least he doesn't smoke.

Sarah Young - The Purge, performed by Sarah Young

Sarah Young - The Purge

“Stand-up comedy with a difference... Sarah Young is a talent which is finding momentum... Check her out.” Australian Stage Online, 2015

Sarah Young stands accused of multiple thoughtcrimes (and normal-crimes) and crimes against popular thought. In a slowly-stifling world of safe spaces and censorship, The Purge is about saying it all before you can’t. A hilarious new stand-up comedy show that defiles safe-spaces in favour of defiance. Swimming The Seas Of Failure, performed by Jasmine Fairbairn

Swimming The Seas Of Failure

Swimming The Seas Of Failure

“The show is perfect for anyone who has ever had a kid or a mom or is married to a mom or one day hopes to be a mom. Basically if you’re human you will relate to this show. ”

Jasmine is so worried about being perceived as a failure as a mother, but it’s impossible not to fail. She fails a thousand times a day and only recently realized that it’s the best part. Failing is hilarious because if you don’t laugh, you cry. Big ugly sobbing with lots of snot type of crying.”

Join Loose Moose alumni and Canadian comic Jasmine Fairbairn with her previously sold out solo show for one night only at Heya Bar as she showcases her own ‘failures’ in marriage, relationships, parenting and some of the more obscure life choices she’s made with sardonic wit. The banality of Costco, parenting and rearing children in the suburbs is the backdrop to her central theme of falling forever short of a ‘perfect life’. Jasmine’s perfectionism sees her frantically trying to rearrange the pieces to achieve an impossible goal hilariously retold through high energy act outs and a killer Australian accent (she worked hours on that).

Jasmine Fairbairn is a Canadian performer with 12 years improvisation training at Loose Moose Theatre with Keith Johnstone and Dennis Cahill and has supported Fiona O’Laughlin, Greg Fleet, Luke Heggie, Mel Buttle and Danny Bhoy.

Thank Me Later, performed by David Woodhead

Thank Me Later

After living in Brisbane for over a year David Woodhead is bringing debut festival show Thank Me Later to Bris Funny Fest.

Thank Me Later is a show for anyone who feels as though they grew up too fast and don't fully know what it's like to function in the real world, or for anyone who has made a mistake in their life and don't how to right their wrongs. But it's also for loose units who enjoy getting on the piss on a Thursday or Sunday arvo. So come on down all you mad dogs.

David is a 19 year old comedian, who highly respected comedy magazine Chortle described his looks "somewhere between a yeti and a small mountain" which is a bit weird, but they also said he has a "he has a mature confidence, [and] makes the stage his own" so it's all good. David is a RAW Comedy National Finalist 2016, and has also opened for Australian comedy legend Peter Rowsthorne from Kath and Kim.

"His youth no means a barrier for a stellar performance, he worked the crowd easily." - Beat Magazine

"Scores huge laughs... One of the shows highlights." - Herald Sun

"Bloody good kid" - Mum

Join us – Marcus Davis, Jonny Haselam and Brad McDonald – while we explore life, relationships, the universe and our minds, as we escape the humdrum life outside. Come on in, the water’s lovely.

The Big Late Show, performed by Snap presented by RuseWebsites

The Big Late Show

The Big Late Show is a chance for comedians and audience alike, to celebrate the end of our Kiwi invasion of what we're sure by this point will be our new favourite festival. Featuring two of NZ's best and some of the stars of the Bris Funny Fest, this will be one of the real highlights of the schedule.

Running a little bit later than usual, this will be an occasion where the comics let their hair down a bit. We're firm believers that a late show should have less structure, fewer rules and more chaos, and that's what we hope to offer to you. With a mix of straight stand up and few interesting twists, this is a unique showcase of what comedy has to offer.

The Epicurean Shark, performed by Sam Bowden

The Epicurean Shark

'The Epicurean Shark' is a one man solo show about why humans and other animals love substances that are intrinsically harmful. Why do we smoke when we know it'll kill us? Why do we party so hard we ruin relationships? Why does too much of the good times kill you?
Having supported the likes of Danny Bhoy, Brian Posehn and Lawrence Mooney, Sam Bowden's debut solo show is an effort to tackle the only big questions he's smart enough to comprehend. Buy tickets to his show so he can blow the money on the vices he's going to joke about.

The Truth About Jack Gramenz, performed by Jack Gramenz

The Truth About Jack Gramenz

The Truth About Jack Gramenz

*** Please dress appropriately in removable layers as this show contains extremely hot takes.

The Truth About Jack Gramenz, the debut solo show from one of Brisbane’s brightest new comics, is about the lies we tell, about ourselves and to ourselves - the ones we tell to the world and the ones it tells back. With his trademark acerbity™ and distinctive brand of absurd hyper-specificity, Gramenz examines the lengths people will go for exposure, and the potentially dangerous consequences of going to them, while skillfully grappling with challenging and confronting topics.

Audiences will be made to laugh (thinking is optional, but encouraged!) while the eponymous Jack Gramenz, one of the youngest yet most experienced performers at this year’s festival, takes them on a journey through a masterful hour of stand-up comedy which promises to be his best yet….

Since crushing (but not winning) numerous RAW Comedy finals, as well as regularly appearing on ABC Radio and Television Gramenz has finally given in to popular demand. Come see why GQ Australia called him some of Australia’s best undiscovered creative talent. This show gives Brisbane comedy fans, or anyone with enough money for a ticket, the chance to find out why.

Top That - Aus vs NZ, performed by Snap presented by RuseWebsites, Justin 'Rusty' White et al.

Top That - Aus vs NZ

Most comedians have lived a life or two in their time, and thus have a few yarns to spin. So we have gathered some of the best to battle to verbal death trying to out do each others tales of wisdom, heroism, debauchery, pain, pleasure and whatever else they may have experienced in their colourful lives.

Us kiwi's pride ourselves on spinning a good yarn, and when Aussie's greatest export is phrases like "old mate" and "true blue Aussi battler", we know you guys can pound out a good bit of banter as well. But it's time to find out who's best, so in a very special addition of Top That we'll have a kiwi team led by critically acclaimed, multi award winning comedian, Justin 'Rusty' White, battling it out with an all star Aussi line up lead by the festival director himself, Steven Morgan.

This show comes fresh from a sell out run at the GoMedia Comedy Carnival in New Zealand, where it won Best Concept.
